Destiny Rising, the mobile spin-off of the popular series, rumoured to still be in development in partnership with NetEase

But what's the story?

Destiny Rising, the mobile spin-off of the popular series, rumoured to still be in development in partnership with NetEase
  • Destiny Rising is a reportedly unannounced spin-off of the popular franchise
  • Reports have swirled about it being a potential collaboration between NetEase and Bungie
  • However, an official announcement is not forthcoming

Destiny Rising, a mobile spin-off of the popular Destiny franchise, could be in the works (or rather still is) according to the latest machinations of the rumour mill. As noted by a variety of outlets such as GamingonPhone and TheGamePost, well-known insider and leaker Kurakasis reported that the game, which is supposedly a collaboration between NetEase and Bungie, is still in the works.

It's a pretty bold claim, especially after principal developer Bungie was hit by a wave of layoffs earlier in the year, with consequential effects on further DLC and updates. However, it's also not the first time we've seen NetEase's name attached to a potential spin-off, as they were with the mega-hit Diablo Immortal.

NetEase also made a $100m investment in Bungie way back in 2019, with rumours about a potential collaboration swirling since 2022.

For my part, I'm a little bit sceptical about this news. I think it's fair to say that Destiny has passed the peak of its popularity, and the layoffs in the past few months laid bare issues with scaling back a team of that size. NetEase does have precedent, but it's worth noting that similarly sized mega-developer Tencent also abandoned work on a spin-off of the hugely popular Nier Automata, so even if Destiny Rising was in development there's no guarantee it hasn't since been shelved.

So, is Destiny Rising still on the cards? Maybe, but that's a big maybe in my opinion.
